As we all know, Uninterruptible power system (UPS)is to protect your critical equipment. Actually, we suggest you learn the key components of a UPS further,so you can better understand your UPS system and ensure your mission critical load remains online. In this article, we show you four key components of online UPS and their functions to help you know more.

The battery: The battery is the heart of your UPS system. They are tasked with supporting the connected load during a utility power failure.

Every battery system contains at least one string, and depending on the online UPS configuration, multiple strings may be added to increase run time and/or redundancy. Batteries within the string are connected in series. Therefore, if a single battery fails or opens, the entire string fails. Good system design calls for multiple strings of batteries versus a single string of batteries.

Regular UPS battery inspection and maintenance is critical. Studies show that up to 20 percent of UPS failures can be attributed to bad batteries, also effect your UPS system.  You’d better inspect your UPS battery Semi-annual, or even quarterly.

The static bypass: The internal static bypass circuit of UPS provides an important line of defense when a UPS failure. This static bypass automatically closes the circuit and allows the incoming power to divert around the rectifier, batteries and the inverter to supply utility grade power (unconditioned) directly to your load.

The static bypass lets critical systems continue functioning even if the UPS’s internal components fail although it isn’t conditioned power.

The rectifier: The rectifier has two main functions. Charging the batteries and converting incoming utility power from AC to DC.Some UPS manufacturers just trickle charge the batteries to keep them at the proper float voltage. Some manufacturers have a more sophisticated method (three steps) that has a fast charge to 90%, by a slow charge to 100%, and finally a turn off charger once the batteries are fully charged.

The inverter:  The final main component of a UPS system is the inverter. This device accepts the D/C from the D/C buss, which is supplied by the rectifier and the battery. The inverter is supplied by the rectifier and the battery. During a power outage, the rectifier will no longer provide current to the D/C buss, leaving the battery to support the load. But if power is not restored before the batteries wear out, the system runs the risk of dropping the load unless an external power source such as a generator kicks in.

UPS systems are a critical part of a data center power infrastructure and they are of great importance for your equipment. The configuration of these main components, as well as additional design aspects, determines how the UPS functions.
